Mars Petcare US issued a statement yesterday regarding the re-call of PEDIGREE® Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites.

A limited number of 52 pound bags of PEDIGREE® Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites was recalled from a number of Costco stores in Northern California and Nevada only and unlike some media outlets reported the product was not recalled from stores statewide.

Mars Petcare Us also recalled 100 20-pound bags of PEDIGREE® Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites that were sold at Albertsons, Southern California and Las Vegas, Nevada.

The product has been recalled because of the fear that it was contaminated with salmonella. So far there have been no reports of pets being contaminated with salmonella.

Salmonella can be potential very dangerous for both pets and if cross contamination occurs for humans as well – especially older people, children, pregnant women and people who have compromised immune systems.
Symptoms that might suggest that your pet is contaminated with salmonella include lethargy, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. For some the symptoms just might include lack of appetite, abdominal pain and fever.

For humans the symptoms you want to look out for are nausea, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, cramps and fever. Sometimes salmonella can also cause more serious health problems such as arthritis, urinary tract symptoms, arterial infections, endocarditis, muscle pain and eye irritation.

In case either the pet owner or the pet is experiencing any of these symptoms contact your doctor or vet respectively. And if you have bought any of the contaminated product dispose of it immediately.

This news got me thinking what on Earth did we do before Internet was invented? The easy accessibility of this type of information has come as a blessing for pet owners.

The situation regarding pet foods is still far from perfect, ideally there would not be any pet food recalls to begin with.

It has to be said I do read the labels and buy pet food that is good for my pets, but when I read accounts of owners who lost their pets to poisonous products, I am in two minds to switch both my dog and my cats to RAW diet (although how I would pull that off with my cats is a mystery, I have never encountered such finicky eaters they put any toddler to shame).

That way I can be certain what they are eating come meal time is not contaminated in any way.
But I do have 2 problems with RAW diet - one is that it is somewhat time consuming to prepare and the second is I am worried if I would be able to balance the meals properly so my pets would get all the nutrients they need for their development and well-being.

So dear readers, do tell us have you and your pets ever been affected by the pet food recall?

Have any of you dear readers switched your pets to RAW diet and how successful it has been for you?
