Dog show with a twist: By Special Guest Blogger Roberta Striga

Santa Cruz, CA was home to a unique kind of dog show last weekend.
“Dog show with the twist” was organized by the Society Dog of Santa Cruz and Kelly’s French Bakery and more then 60 dogs and their owners showed up for the event.

From all the categories I have skimmed through, the biggest and the smallest dog competition was the most common one.

There was the Longest nose competition which went to Chula, a Borzoi Russian wolfhound. Best Trick went to Jiggy, the Chihuahua who is not fond of the word Ferocious – it makes her bark and growl.

Best under bite went to Mica, a Lhasa Apso, Best Smile to Britney the Pit bull while Yoshi, the Chihuahua mix was named the Best kisser.


Oldest dog was Jelly Gambini a Maltese, but my favorite by far was the Best dressed category that went to Britney the Pit bull who was dressed in pink and black bikini with pink toenails.

Now that is one fashion conscious dog that could give the real Britney a run for her money (I do not even paint my toe nails to match my bikini!).

I was never really sold on the concept of dog shows. Do not get me wrong, I have only been to 2 or 3 dog shows in my lifetime, so by no means does that make me an expert. This is just a personal opinion.

I know dog shows serve their purpose for breeders and people who own show dogs and working dogs, but while I loved mingling around and looking at all the adorable pooches, I disliked the formality of it.

My friend’s Rottweiler got disqualified because when the judge went to check her teeth she licked his face and rolled on her back waiting for her tummy to be tickled.
I understand there are rules and regulations and dogs are judged by their breed’s standards but it seemed so heartless to me to see a dog getting disqualified for being what dogs are - bundles of joy, love, playfulness and endless mischief.

Why I love idea of the “Dog show with the twist”? Because it celebrates both old and young dogs, the mixes and the purebreds. And I love the fact even though your dog might be a bit on the unusual side it does not mean you cannot show her off and enter her into the competition. Even if she does roll on her back waiting for her tummy to be tickled it does not mean she is any less worthy of taking part or that it will result in negative points.
