Pet Retailer Gives Back
In November of last year, PetsMart Charities (www.petsmartcharities.org) pledged $5 million to support spay-neuter initiatives in Texas. I just learned that they’ve expanded that outreach with a $13 million spay-neuter initiative in Los Angeles to trap, neuter and return (TNR) feral cats. These kitties also will receive needed vaccinations.
A recent survey revealed that more than 80 percent of respondents support the notion of allowing feral cats to continue to roam free—as long as they’re managed properly, of course. That means curbing their ability to reproduce, and keeping them healthy. When a properly fed and maintained feral colony remains stable in a given neighborhood, it keeps other potentially sick, unhealthy strays from moving in. You’ll recognize maintained colonies by the notched tip of one ear that identifies them.
