Liquid treat for dogs by Guest Blogger Roberta Striga

It never fails to amaze me what you can find on the Internet.

During online perusing of one of my favorite British tabloids (I know it is a vice and I am working on it but failing miserably ) I stumbled upon an article about beer for dogs.

I kid you not – there is such a thing as beer for dogs.

The dog beer or to use its real name Kwispelbier originated from Netherlands (Kwispel means tail wagging in Dutch, I bet they wag their tails afterwards!).

The idea originated from pet show owner Gerrie Berendsen who wanted her dogs to have a tasty beverage after a day of hunting. So she came up with this particular mixture and hired a small local brewery to make it.

Now before you accuse me of trying to push alcohol on your dogs (for the record I would never ever do that) – Kwispelbier is alcohol free and it is also non-carbonated.
It contains beef and malt barley extracts to entice your dog to drink more, which technically makes it a treat in a bottle. And as an added bonus the beer is safe for human consumption (although I am still unclear whether or not that is a good thing).
Be as it may, the beer for dogs debuted in England through a company Pets at Home and after doing initial tests to see if the customers will respond, they have now gone nationwide with the product.
So now pet owners can enjoy an ice cold beer of choice and the dog does not have to feel left out. Just make sure not to swap the bottles (the big picture of Alsatian on the bottle should give you a clue).
I should mention that a bottle of dog beer of just 33cls retails at Ł1.99 (which translates to about $4).
Now that is one expensive liquid treat.

Interesting idea. BUT, the veterinary community is about to learn just how common gluten intolerance (celiac disease) is in the pet just as we have recently learned about the true incidence in humans.

Celiac authorities now estimate that the incidence of celiac diseae in people is 1:30 while that of gluten sensitivity could be as high as 1:3. From my experince, the incidence of gluten intolerance in pets must be VERY high, with the poster child being the Irish setter.

Most beer contains gluten as it is derived from barley, one of the three gluten grains (wheat, barley, & rye). However, there are two new beers for us "celiacs" (gluten intolerants)- Redbridge, distributed by Anheuser-Busch, and New Grist, made by Lakefront Brewery. These are brewed using the alternatives to the gluten grains, being made from sorghum and rice.

Dogs do seem to like the taste of beer so it would be better to have a non-alcoholic beverage made from gluten-free grains like the ones above. THOSE would be on the cutting edge of what we know to be THE most important nutritional information of our time.

I hope this helps,

John

Thank you Dogtor J for all the info.

My old dog never really was tempted by beer, he hated the smell. I would not even dare give him something we have tried and tested before because of his age and his sensitive stomach.

But you raise an important point about food intolerance with animals. I know a little bit about celiac disease because a neighbor's son has the condition, so anytime I bake anything for them I double check all the ingredients with her to make sure its nothing that can cause a reaction.

In all probability I would not even know about it were it not for the fact that someone I know suffers from it.

I just felt I needed to drop in and mention howdy to everyone. I wanted to acquaint me, my name is Ashley.

I decided to post now because I think message board as a whole is very functional and informal place. I enjoy reading all of the topics and topics here and taking into consideration that I don't post much, I came to the conclusion to create my very initial thread.

I recently created my first site and desired to share it with everyone and receive some constructive feedback.
