All Critters Great and Small

Every year for the past decade, I’ve spent a week in Colorado with several of my writer friends on a retreat. It’s ladies only, no makeup, no cell phone reception, lots of shopping, incredible fellowship, and great food.

Oh, we all take work along. Many of us have deadlines and projects to complete while there. But the stress level bottoms out on the mountain. I feel my shoulders drop to relaxed positions, and work—and play—cleanses and rejuvenates on a level that happens nowhere else.

Much of that has to do with the view. The mountains loom over us, protective and brooding and majestic. Watching rain storms blow in at the same level of the deck where we dine offers an unparallel view of raw nature. One year, it snowed on the mountain, and 45 minutes later the sun warmed to shirt sleeve proportions. Wildflowers paint the meadows while aspen leaves shiver in the breeze.

And oh my, the wildlife. . .There’s something incredibly uplifting and freeing to see these creatures up close. Hummingbirds dive bomb and part hair begging for the feeders to be filled. Heaven help me if my cat or d*g ever had the energy or persistence of these midget dynamos!

Deer wander past. Turkeys trot in regimented lines down the dirt road. Raccoon families visit and scrounge for dropped tidbits. Bears bring cinnamon babies to drink from the hummer feeder.

Yet I always seem to find the domesticated furbles even during my travels. I have to get my pet-fix somehow, while away from Magic and Seren! What a lovely combination—shopping and visiting with kitties at the same time. Now THAT’S a vacation!
