Petside Items: Best Cities for Pets from Guest Blogger Jo Singer
I bet if you asked any of your friends a question concerning a priority for them in their daily lives, that most of them would choose something health related. They may be about fitness, good nutrition or their physical appearance.
Additionally it might be about the high cost of medical insurance and care, but no matter what the specific issue may be, finding a solid means to protect their health is the bottom line.
While surfing the Internet this morning, I ran across a very interesting article with a health related theme. Being crazy about animals, what immediately caught my eye was this particular research was aimed to ascertain the healthiest cities in the United States for pets.
After one of the largest pet food manufacturers institute conducted this study, they reported that five of our cities could proudly boast that title.

1. Denver, Colorado
2. Oakland, California
3. Portland, Oregon
4. Anaheim, California.
5. San Francisco, California
This comprehensive study was based on an evaluation of 30 different issues, which affect a pet's health, greatly affecting the quality of their lives. Major issues considered in the study were the pets' physical fitness, body condition and the quality of preventive care available to clients. Veterinarians participating in the study reported that over 50% of the cats and dogs in our country are overfed and overweight. Owners who follow prudent feeding and exercise programs can prolong the lives of their pets significantly.
Other important results of the study included that San Francisco, which reports the lowest number of cigarette smokers, have cats and dogs in residence who can claim cleaner lungs. The city also boasts a zero number of days with an ozone alert.
Oakland and New York City claims the highest percentage of dogs neutered, while San Jose and New York tied with San Jose in the cat department.
New Orleans can brag about the ideal body weight category since 50% of their canines are able to wag their tails for winning that distinction.
With one veterinarian to every 745 pets, Columbus, Ohio leads the country in the ratio between pet and vet.
Pet owners can effectively improve the odds for their pets to live longer and healthier lives. Regular veterinary visits, a prudent vaccination program, appropriate flea control and a nutritious diet enhance the quality of their lives.

This is a very interesting way of viewing the condition of the environment. Surely, though, we are responsible enough, with all of our know-how, to not let our pets become like canaries in the mines.Min
