Happy Where I Am

My new client Django came from a local shelter, and the assumption was that he’d never lived in a home before.

Yikes.

I’ve worked with “outside dogs” before, and some of them were lovely, highly adaptable dogs, and some … weren’t. Left in “solitary confinement” and forced to deal with the elements, boredom and a lack of companionship, many outdoor dogs then have difficulty transitioning to home life and learning the social graces necessary for living inside. The plight of the backyard dog is a sad one. No one illustrates it more poignantly than Patrick McConnell’s “Mutts” cartoon … search for “Guard Dog Kissed by the Moon” and try not to cry at the four-panel depiction sad, lonely Guard Dog.

When I walked up to Django’s house I was prepared to meet a stressed-out pup. Indoor life can be a culture shock.

I was pleasantly surprised.

Django was charming! Happy, confident, and completely at ease in his new home though he’s only been there for under a week.

His sleek good looks hide a truly goofy guy … this is a dog with a sense of humor. When we worked on downs (which he picked up almost immediately) he’d roll on to his belly and look at me with a grin on his face.

“Is this down enough for you?”

If Django truly was an outdoor dog in his prior life I’m amazed by his resiliency and adaptability. Amazed, but not surprised.

Victoria and Django have been amazing and this comes on top of how wonderful the WARL was/is. My bride set this up by forwarding me the link to Django at the WARL....I started dreaming about him and was hooked. After 7 bred dogs along with their issues I said enough of this...give me a mixed breed and Bride and I can give it a good home. I thought this would be the 'best' dog I ever had and that's the way it looks like it is going.

Happy alpha
