Faithful Friends

I had a “Hollywood Moment” a few weeks ago when I was invited to CA to be a guest on a new show called “Faithful Friends.”

It’s an “all about pets” show hosted by former stuntwoman and pet enthusiast Wanda Goldberg, and 10-year-old Electra Mustaine (you heavy metal fans might recognize her last name). I’ve been on TV sets before but I’ll admit that I was amazed at the number of people working on this show. Two directors and a producer, three HD camera guys, a teleprompter guy, an on-set photographer, numerous animal handlers, three production assistants, a hair and make-up person, tons of sound and lighting dudes … this show was big time!

My first set-up of the day was Q&A with Wanda on the beautiful outdoor set. Right before the cameras rolled one of the crew guys mentioned that up until that point, every single guest had made it through their interview without needing to stop and re-shoot – everyone did it in one take.

The pressure was on … could I do it too?

You know it, baby. We nailed it, and the crew broke out in spontaneous applause after we finished. Whew.

Here am I am on the set, basking in my victory. No, I’m not throwing a gang sign:

After the Q&A Wanda and I moved on to do a few product demos. We talked about nail dremels, pee posts and crates, and I did my best to roll with it and not sound too QVC. Then they threw suet and a birdfeeder at me and let’s just say that I floundered a bit. One of my brilliant improvisations was, “Yumm, suet. Can I have a bite?” Don’t think that one will make it to air.

Don’t get me wrong, every single aspect of the shoot was fun … I’ve never met a friendlier group of people. The whole show just had this vibe … everyone was having a good time. They even laughed at all of my corny jokes!

Something very cool happened about mid-way through the day … the producer pulled me aside and asked if I’d be interested in coming back the following week to shoot some one-minute dog training demos.

Would I?

I took them up on it and a week later I was back in CA spending a day and a half doing my dog training thing on camera. I used a teleprompter for the first time, did some green screen stuff and even did a few “beauty shots” (Which I’m sure were anything but … they were close-ups of me holding an adorable little pup and smiling into the camera. May I remind you that it was HD. Close-up. The horror.)

The show is set to air in early ’08, and if all goes according to plan, yours truly will be a recurring guest.

And maybe, just maybe, you’ll see my infamous suet quote.
