Dog Shows

Did you check out the National Dog Show on Thanksgiving, in between the turkey and the pumpkin pie?

Whenever I’m channel surfing and I pass a dog show I wind up stopping and watching for a while. If they’re showing unusual breeds I use my hands to hide the breed information at the bottom of the screen and test my knowledge. This year they stumped me more than a few times with some “new” breeds just welcomed into the AKC family (they’re not actually new new … many date back hundreds of years.)

Did you catch the Beauceron? How about the Swedish Vallhund? Or the Lustig Hund? (Ok, I made that one up. Any German speakers out there?) Do you think that the new breeds were they worthy additions?

I’m going to make a controversial statement here … the judging often seems really … arbitrary. Dog show folks, don’t crucify me! But let’s be serious. Why isn’t a Boston Terrier or Boxer winning best in show every single year? Clearly there are no finer breeds on this earth. Why, my two guys are shining examples of genetic perfection:

Ok, that’s a lie.

Sure, Sumner is an extremely handsome guy, but Zeke? He’s my little cross-eyed catfish dog.

Even though my next dog will come from a shelter, I still wind up selecting a few “fantasy dogs” from the televised dog shows. “Oooh, I want a Brussels Griffon! No, wait, an Affenpinscher! Stop the presses, make mine a Bloodhound!”

Do you get sucked into dog shows too? Do you agree with this year’s winner?
