Inspiring Tales of Biped Cats

Caffrey must have a pretty amazing guardian angel watching over his shoulder

Some pet guardians and  veterinarians may judge that when a pet’s disabilities are so severe, euthanasia is the only option since chances are the pet would not be able to live a happy and full life.

Such well-intended rationale is being put to the test by two kitties, Caffrey and Anakin. According to Catster, Caffrey, a very handsome black Persian cat, was run over by a car 10 years ago. As a result of the accident, he lost his left hind leg. His left front paw was also seriously injured, but following a series of extensive surgeries (costing Sue about $5,450), his paw was able to be saved.

However, just four months ago, Caffrey’s veterinarian discovered a malignant tumor on his left front leg. The veterinarian consulted with four colleagues who were all of the opinion that rather than amputating the leg which would make it far more difficult for Caffrey to lead a normal life; euthanasia would be the kindest intervention.

But Sue didn’t agree. She strongly believed that Caffrey would adjust to being a bi-Ped and insisted that the vet amputate his leg. And, in far less time than had been anticipated, Caffrey is getting around splendidly on his two legs. Sue is reported to have said, “"Everyone who sees him is astonished at what he can do. He doesn't seem bothered at all by having only two legs."

Anakin is another biped cat whose story has gone viral. This 10 month-old kitty's guardian Carrie Hawks, a fantasy cat artist, rescued him when he was a kitten when he came to eat with his feral colony in the woods near her father’s home. Anakin was born without a pelvis and back legs, a birth defect that may have been caused by a genetic problem caused by inbreeding, or due the malnourishment of his mother.

But not having back legs has never stopped Anakin from being active and playing with the other cats that share Carrie’s home. Although he has undergone two surgeries to repair an anal prolapse, his overall health is good.

On his busy Facebook Page Anakin shares everything “mewsworthy” for fans to keep up with his progress. Check out his FAQ  page for more in depth information about this little cutie.

His video is a must-watch.

Anakin looks as if he has a loving, caring, responsible caregiver and a good family life! I'm not sure about Caffrey, though -- I do not believe that any cat (except feral cats) should be outdoors, and Caffrey certainly should be kept inside. Doesn't his history teach his caregivers anything? *sigh*

Concerned or just trying to be a bully? Implying someone is not a good caregiver to their animals is terrible. This cat looks great considering all he has been through. I commend this family for not chosing euthanasia.

I was also concerned when I saw Caffrey outside. Would love to know he is now a full time house cat.
