Wag'N Enterprises - Nearly half a million animals died or were left homeless after Hurricane Katrina, and many were pets. The government's response to pets stranded during the hurricane was enough to motivate a Virginia woman to take matters into her own hands. Ines de Pablo started Wag'N Enterprises, a pet emergency management business that launched in August 2007. The Herndon, Va. business features emergency supplies and training for pets. "We want you to be aware of the hazards, know what you can do about them, and then how to get ready for them," de Pablo said. The Humane Society of the United States says a nationwide push for animal preparedness is pushing more businesses to take pets into consideration when creating disaster solutions. "We are seeing that in the course of states and local communities creating better disaster plans that incorporate pets, you see the businesses are brought in, in that way," said Nancy Perry, Vice President of Government Affairs. "We also see a lot of resources from businesses that come into disasters now." For those who may not have access to pet emergency options, de Pablo recommends that pet owners fill a backpack with three days of food and water, along with basic first aid supplies. www.wagn4u.com
