Why do my dogs eat dirt?

Q: We have two Miniature Schnauzers that continually eat dirt out of the potted plants. Could there be vitamin deficiencies in the food we feed them?

A: It is possible that your pets are lacking something in their diet. Your pets should be examined by your veterinarian who may wish to run bloodwork. If no underlying cause is identified it is possible that your schnauzers are just being mischievous and eat dirt out of boredom! You may have to remove the potted plants from their reach or confine them while they cannot be supervised.

I have the same problem with mine. Only she looks outside in our backyard for lizards, ect... under things, around the storge barn. I assure you she is fed enough not to have to do this.

I have 4 dogs who all eat the same food and have had changes in their diet a couple of times in the last year trying to upgrade the nutritional value of their food. But it doesn't seem to stop 2 of my dogs from continually eating dirt while in the back yard!
One of them also licks his front legs and feet all the time and that is because he has allergies.
