Which Bones are Safe for Dogs?

Q: What animal bones are safe for our dog to chew on?

A: Animal bones in general can be very dangerous to pets! If swallowed they can cause life threatening obstructions within the intestinal tract. Chicken bones are probably the most dangerous. Pet stores sell bones that are safe for pets since they are large and cannot be broken into small pieces. That is probably the safest way to give your pet a bone!

I have found even the pet store bones can be broken into pieces. My girl June who is a Staffordshire Terrier can usually do the hip joint or other bone in about an hour. So just be careful either way. Thanks

I purchased my boy Oz (cockapoo) a bone from the pet store. It was a large smoked bone. He had had them many times in the past. Well this one must of REALLY been smoked, he ate half of it before I noticed. Guess you know we took a fast trip to the ER Vet. It was a Friday night! I was concerned that he may of not chewed it into small pieces. And would have trouble passing it. After X-rays, and discharge instructions, we were free to leave. Cost $265.00 but he's worth every penny of it. Guess you know he's never gotten another one of those bones!
