What Causes Fur Matting?
Q: My older cat has developed matting of her fur. These are very thick mats and cannot be combed out. What is causing this and how can I help her?
A: Cats who do not groom themselves properly develop mats. Some cats are too large to reach certain areas while grooming and as a result these areas become matted. It is extremely important NOT to cut mats out with scissors. Scissors can easily cut your cat's skin. Mats should be shaved out by a groomer or your vet.
