Treatment for Cat Hip Displasia

Q: I think my cat has some hip displasia. Sometimes, it seems to me that he is in pain. I know that OTC medicines like Tylenol and aspirin are toxic for cats. Is there anything I can get to ease his pain when he's having a particularly rough day? P.S. Veterinarian resources here in Kuwait are somewhat limited.

A: You are absolutely correct that those medications could be very harmful to your pet. While it would be ideal to have your pet examined by a veterinarian I realize that this is not easy for you. If hip dysplasia is suspected, over-the-counter glucosamine and chondroitin supplements can be used. This medication is also used in people. While it is not a pain killer, it does act to protect joints and hopefully minimize the pain if it is a result of hip dysplasia. Good Luck.

Pet stores have glucosamine/chondroiten bottled specifically for cats so you don't have to guess. Just follow the directions. Good luck and I hope this helps your feline friend.
