Travel Tips from Dr. Lauren
Summer time means vacation time for pets and their owners. Here's a travel checklist of my health tips to keep pets safe during their summer trips. Happy travels! -Dr. Lauren
Have an up to date health certificate, vaccine history and rabies tag with you.
Talk to your vet about extra vaccines - such as leptospirosis and lyme for dogs -since these diseases may be more prevalent in certain areas.
Make sure your pet is up to date on heartworm and flea/tick prevention, especially before camping!
Talk to your veterinarian about sedatives or motion sickness drugs for car and airplane rides.
For long car rides and airplane rides be sure to have fresh water readily available for your pet. Remember to NEVER leave a pet alone in the car when it is warm out!
Be sure to pack plenty of your pets' regular food and any prescription medication that they may be taking. Changing foods abruptly can lead to stomach upset!
Have a crate for pets if they are going to be left in a hotel room or different environment alone.
If you plan to let your dog swim, be sure to thoroughly clean and dry the ears afterwards to prevent ear infections.
Pack sunblock to protect your pets' hairless areas if they will be exposed to a lot of sunlight.
