Q: How to Help Dog with Irritable Bowel Disease
Q: I have a chocolate lab that has irritable bowel disease. What can I do to ensure that she has the best life I can give her?
A: Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder commonly caused by stress or anxiety. This diagnosis can be made after other causes of diarrhea are ruled out. To treat IBS, stress must be kept to a minimum, sometimes even with the help of anti anxiety drugs prescribed by your veterinarian. Fiber supplementation (Metamucil) or high fiber diets can also be a help.
Inflammatory bowel disease is another cause of chronic diarrhea where the intestines are thickened and inflammed. This disease is diagnosed with an intestinal biopsy and is treated with various prescription drugs and diets.

my dog had foul smelling gas and has a green color paste stool. He also has vomitted a few times with the same foul smell. What could it be?

Regarding the dog with Irritable Bowel Disease. I too have a dog with IBD, for the most part it is under control. I feed him Natural Balance, Sweet Potato and Venison Dog Food, I also have him on Totalbiotics, which is a probiotic powder you sprinkle on the food (you can get it on the web). It seems to work wonders for him. Good luck.
