Q: How Do I Get My Dog to Take a Pill?

Q: My nearly two-year-old male Labradoodle has to take benedryl for allergies and hates pills and medications. I have tried the peanut butter method and the pill on the back of the tongue method.

With the peanut butter, he will still manage to spit out the pill, and with the pill on the back of the tongue, he flatly refuses to swallow and I can't justify making him sit there while holding his mouth closed for 20-30 minutes at a time. Any other suggestions would be very much appreciated.

A: Giving pills to pets can definitely be quite frustrating!  There are treats called pill pockets that are specifically made to hide pills.  However, these may not work for you since hiding them in peanut butter doesn't really help.

You can try crushing the pills and mixing them in with something tasty.  Also, ask your vet or a local compounding pharmacy if Benadryl can be made into a flavored liquid for your dog!

I grind mine up and put it in some thing he really likes , ground meat some times with meat broth, ice cream, canned dog food. He wants the food so bad that he will eat the pill. Mix it in real good so he will have to eat it all.

My dog finds the pill no matter what tasty treat I stuff it in. I've tried everything from dog treats to steak. I have to shove it down his throat. Luckily he's healthy and doesn't need to take pills often
