Q: Are Fatty Tumors Anything to Worry About?

Q: Our Labrador is seven years old and has some fat tumors. Are they anything to worry about? Our vet said no, but my sister-in-law said her dog died from them.

A: Fatty tumors can be lipomas, which are benign, or liposarcomas, which are malignant.  In order to know which type of fatty tumor your lab has, cytology or a biopsy must be performed.  If the mass is benign, your veterinarian may not wish to remove it as long as it is not located in an area that may adversely affect your pet's normal behavior.

I'm concerned about the safety of flea medications for my older Yorkie, and cat. I've read that they may have long term adverse effects on the liver, and other organs. Can you recommend the safest product? Thanks, Ceci

Warning! Be very careful when giving REVOLUTION to your cats older than 10 years of age. We have 7 cats ranging in age from 6 to 21 years old. The 21 year old's sister was 17 when we gave her REVOLUTION and it put her in a stupor that made her act as if she were drunk. I told the VET what her symptoms were and that it might be the REVOLUTION but he told me he never heard any negative reactions from REVOLUTION and Phizer, the maker . So I thought oh well I'll skip a month and dose her a month later. Unfortunately, since the VETS had not received "for your eyes only" literature from Phizer, the maker of REVOLUTION, I must have been wrong. Again she went down, but this time I called the drug company, Phizer. They immediately connected me with one of their VETS and she told me that can be a problem. If the cat lives past 3 days it will be ok. Well, she died in day 2. I told the Phizer VET why they didn't at least inform the Vets across the country of these problems and she said it wasn't enough of a problem that needed to be told. So my cat of 17 +_ years died because my VET didn't know. The drug company is in business to sell flea medication not scare people in not buying. So if my VET had received literature from Phizer maybe the outcome might have been different. Be very careful in dosing older cats and dogs. My advise would be for you to use something less toxic. Don't buy REVOLUTION for the 1 dose that can safeguard your pet from fleas, ticks, heart worms, etc.. too potent.
