Q: Getting Rid of Ticks and Fleas on Puppies and Kittens

Q: What can I use to get fleas off of kittens and puppies?

A: The best thing you can do for your puppy or kitten is to prevent flea infestation. Your veterinarian should carry a variety of topical products that when applied once monthly to your pets skin can prevent flea infestations. In general, veterinary products are preferred to pet store bought products. While over the counter products tend to be cheaper, they are often ineffective and sometimes even harmful to your pet.

If your pet does get fleas, the first step is to give your pet a flea bath or use a flea spray. Once you have ridden your pet of adult fleas and flea dirt it is important to clean your home. Be sure to vacuum all carpeting thoroughly. Flea larvae and eggs like to hide in carpeting. Also, wash all bedding that is in your home. Many stores carry products specifically designed to kill fleas in the environment.

Remember, you must completely rid your home of all fleas, eggs and larvae. If you do not, your pet can easily become infected again!
