How Can I Express My Dog's Anal Glands at Home?
Q:strong> How can I express my Chihuahua's anal glands? Is it safe for me to do it myself without hurting the pet?
A:strong> You can safely express your Chihuahua's anal glands at home. It is relatively simple once you get the hang of it. The Anal sacs are located at about 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock just within your pets rectum. Use gloves and a lubricant like KY jelly and place your index finger in the rectum at either 3 or 9 o'clock.

To answer comment from March 6th...most dogs don't need to have this done. Its only if they have issues. The only dog we've ever had need this is a 10 lb mini dauchund. I leave it up to the vet to do it, its not expensive and I hear its pretty nasty! And Brett, was it soon after? My dog needs it done about every 3-4 months.

In response to Jock Pierre and shedding, we have the same issue with my daughter's Chihuahua/Terrier mix and the vet suggested trying a wheat-free dog food. I found some at my local Petsmart and so far so good. She really likes the food and it's even cheaper than the one brand I was buying!. Good Luck

I have a Golden Retriever she needed her Glands expressed a couple of times while she was between 4 and 6 months old. One trip to the vet he recommeded adding pure pumpkin pie filling that you buy in the can about a tablespoon per feeding. Because the dog needed more fiber in her diet. It worked great.

I have a dashaund, corgi, jack russell mix. He is almost 2 yrs old and I have to express his anal glands every couple of months. I know when it's time because he gets really bad smelly gas and rubs his bum across the carpet.

My shi tzu has to have his glands expressed every three to four weeks. I take him to the vet.

I finally expressed one anal gland. It's easier than I thought. Remember 3 and 9 on the clock, and do it gently. I didn't get the horrible smell, though, so I'm wondering if I should try again.

I think I need to express my chihuahuas glands. I read the 3 and 9 part but then what? What do you do once you're in there?
