Dr. Lauren on her Adopted Dog Olivia

My dog Olivia is a mixed breed that I rescued from the streets of St. Kitts, where I attended veterinary school. She was found by another veterinary student roaming the streets at 8 weeks of age and was skin and bones, like most of the strays on the island. I immediately fell in love and have now had her for six years.

Olivia is grateful to have the life that every dog deserves. She is an extremely well behaved and healthy dog. St. Kitts, as well as many other islands/countries, has a huge stray animal population. Fortunately for the strays of St. Kitts, there are hundreds of veterinary students that are willing to adopt these strays and institute spay/neuter clinics to help to control the pet overpopulation.

The stray population is just as much a problem here in the states as it is in other countries. Shelters are over- flowing with unwanted pets, many of whom may never get adopted. Adopting or rescuing a pet is a life-saving measure. It has truly been a rewarding experience for me and I will continue to adopt and rescue.

Olivia has filled the past six years of my life with nothing but joy. Every home should be filled with the love and gratitude that an adopted pet provides!
