Q: Why do My Dogs Eat Feces? Will it Hurt Them?

Q: My two Shih Tzus eat each others feces. We have tried classical training and even Distaste pills (that made them eat it worse). Is there anything that you suggest to help stop this? Is it bad for their health?

A: There are many dogs that exhibit this undesirable trait! It can be bad for their health if your dog consumes the feces of a dog infected with parasites. If your dogs are parasite-free it shouldn't cause more than bad breath!
For training advice you can try a citronella collar. This collar sprays foul smelling citronella in their faces when activated. One thing that has worked for others would be to put Tabasco sauce or hot sauce on the feces. Then when the pet tries to ingest it they are upset with the taste. Meat tenderizer or fresh pineapple added to the food can also help to make the feces taste less desirable! Good Luck!

My 10yearold dashund is whininig as if something is hurting him, he is hardly walking, if walking at all. I have no idea what is wrong. could you help.

Lana April 7, 2009 5:26 PM

Hey Kevin - My friend's older doxie had the same thing. You might want to take your dog to the vet and have them check the discs in his back. Doxies, Bassets and Corgis tend to have a lot of back problems (slip discs), especially when they get older due to their elongated bodies. That may be the problem. Hope you figure it out and your dog feels better.

my sis had to have surgery on her dashund for the vertebrae in her neck.i think it was from all the activity and jumping up and down

If any of your pets, no matter what breed/species, is displaying signs of discomfort in any way it is better not to bother speculating about what it might be but take it to a qualified vet who can make a correct diagnosis and help get them back on track as quickly as possible. There are many things that could be wrong when an animal displays signs of pain or stops moving, from a musculo/skeletal prob such as the sliped discs mentioned or torn ligaments, to a kidney infection, twisted bowel, paralysis ticks or other toxic critter encounters like snake or spider bite. As soon as your animal tells you something is wrong, act quick.

My dogs ar shih uzs. . Thay are olways laying down. After thay play. Can you help me? do you have anything to help?

D Neely May 12, 2009 4:50 AM

Don't worry about them laying down after they play. They are just tired. Mine does the same thing. Their small faces cause them not to breath as easy as the bigger dogs. One of mine has allergies and they snore because of their flat face. They just get out of breath when playing so hard sometimes, just as you do when you play.LOL

My malti-bi is having a hard time controlling his hind quarters. His back end seems to have a mind of its own. Just started. He has a tendency to eat things he shouldn't, we found a thin strand of wire in his mouth after the hind leg paralesis. Please help.

I have a 9 month old chihuahua that seems to keep eating the feces of my other two older dogs. Is this normal behavior for younger dogs? I have been told it means the dogs are lacking something in their diet, but Maya has a well balanced diet.

I have a australian kelpie dog. She is 8 years old and very healty. She sleeps with us at night in our bed. I put a blanket on top of our comforter for her to sleep. We woke up this morning and their was a pool of blood about the size of volleyball. She went out side and wanted to play. I checked every part of her mouth, ears, nose, female parts and anal. I also check her paws and underside of her tummy. She is still acting like their is nothing wrong with her. We are very confused.

My 7 yr old Mini Daschund developed in March what seemed to be sneezing and snorting. Vet said it is most likely allergies and should give her Benadryl all through the summer. Does this sound right? It's been months and if I stop the benadryl it starts again.

How much food should a Shi-tzu eat? My dog excercise of the day is throwing the ball in the house for maybe about 15 min. Too hot in Phx to walk outdoors. He weighs 15lbs.

I'm taking my cat to the vet friday, however, I just wanna ask incase anyone can give me any ideas- My precious cat has a lump the size of a golf ball in her lower abdomin. She does not seem to be in pain and the lump is pretty hard. She has always been petite but she is losing quite a bit of weight. Can anyone give me any ideas? She has a sister and both have always thrown up food almost everyday. They always have. I kind of let it go because they were always healthy, active and happy. But, after a while, I worry they arent getting enough nutrition. Has anyone ever had this problem?

I have had several dogs in my lifetime, but when you have a dog that seems to delight in eating his own feces, it's a shock. My Shih T'zu tries to do exactly that. I've talked to his vet about this.

Well. I'm writing to pass along this information to whoever needs it.

Any owner of a Shih T'zu knows you can't yell at them, because they tend to shut down, and that's never a goal. But when he goes for his feces, a loud, gutteral noise does work. He only hears that sound from me when he goes for his pooh. It scares him and he runs away from it.

It works better than a loud NO.

Hope that helps someone, because that trait is gross!

My kitten is roughly 6 months old. He weighs 6.5 lbs. he went to the vet 2 days ago for sneezing and a swollen eye with discharge. They said he had ear mites and gave him a dose of revolution, and uri and put him on .75ml 50mg Amoxicillin and terramycin ointment for his eyes both 3x daily. Since the appointment his bad eye has swollen totally closed, his good eye shows sign of infection and is starting to swell slightly and discharge and his sneezing has gotten twice as bad...also now every time he sneezes he has explosive diarrhea. Is this something I should panic about or is it just the medicine hasn't kicked in yet?

Leslie October 31, 2009 10:16 PM

I have a 6 month old kitten that is pregnant and she refuses to eat or drink water unless I spoon feed her and fill a medicine dropper with water. Is there anyway to get her to eat on her own so I don't have to put up with her growling and clawing me every time I feed her? She was pregnant before I got her and I am feeding her moistened kitten chow and she eats it when I put it in her mouth.

I just bought a toy poodle and I noticed yesterday that he pooped and tried to eat his own poop, I was wondering why his breath was smelling so bad. How can you stop them from doing that and why do they do that.

Trina Piretti November 6, 2009 4:41 PM

this is not in regards to the above question but i have one of my own to ask....i have a dog and he is a chihuahua, dautson, and some kind of terrior.....i know that is almost all of the "anti-socail" dogs in one. so since i got him at 3 months i have done nothing but try to get make him as social and at least civil around people and other dogs. he is now a year and half and he is not as bad as he used to be but not great and still working on it. but now he has started something new....when he does not want to be moved or bothered he will "rrrrr" (growl) at me or my mom who lives with us. he has never nipped or bit us or for that matter even looked like he was going to. my question is should i give him a time out in his gbed for growling at us? how do i take the growl negatively or is it a bad thing? or is it him just communicating with me? is a growl neccessarily a bad thing?

Ben Muntz November 16, 2009 1:16 AM

My boxer-lab mix... I do not know what is going on with him. I assume that he ate a piece of chocolate cake, but I can't prove he did or not. He has been eating and drinking normally ,but when I let him out today he went diarrhea as soon as he got out there. He has had a weird, awkward smell to his breathe. Also, he has been running around a lot but then again I do have a big backyard. In which he runs around everyday. I am concerned on what I should do, should I take him to a vet just to be safe or.. Wait one more day to see if he gets better or worse?
