Do Dogs Lose Teeth Like Humans Do?

Q: Do pets loose teeth and get new ones like humans do? My 3-year-old cat has already lost one tooth and he has a loose one. Is this normal?

A: Cats and dogs do lose their baby teeth and get an adult set. A 3-year-old cat already has an adult set. It sounds like your cat has dental disease which would cause bad breath and teeth to fall out. Have your veterinarian check the teeth. Loose teeth are painful and your vet may wish to clean and removed diseased teeth from your pet.

My name is Kiki- Dog is Buddy/Yorkie Terrier November 10, 2009 12:51 PM

He is turning 3 end of this month and all of his bottom teeth are loose. I have had his teeth professionally cleaned twice since I got him but have not been brushing his teeth regularly (have the enzyme toothpaste). I brush them once every 3 weeks or 2 weeks. He is 5 lbs and it's like brushing a cat's teeth. Really hard to do and get in there. Can you give me some advice on this? Best, Kiki
