Saluki

The Saluki is related to the Afghan Hound, Borzoi, Irish Wolfhound, Scottish Deerhound, and Greyhound. All descended from the royal dog of Egypt, the beloved companion of Egyptian pharaohs and the royal family. Over the centuries these dogs developed into different breeds.

Where they lived had a major effect on how they turned out. The Saluki was the dog of the Moslems, who considered him sacred. He slept in the sheik's tent. The graceful and beautiful Saluki is usually quiet indoors, but is active outdoors and needs serious exercise. This dog is fast. Because of his independent nature, training him takes patience and humor. He is devoted to his owner and does not usually warm up to strangers.

The Saluki's ears, legs, and tail have long silky hair, while the rest of the body has a short coat. His colors include white, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle and tan, black and tan, and tricolor (white, black, and tan).

General Appearance: Graceful and speedy, strong and active, dignified, gentle, and faithful.

Size, Proportion, and Substance: Height--males, 23 to 28 inches; females may be considerably smaller.

Fun Facts

Because they belonged to desert tribes, Salukis developed strong resistance to the heat of the desert day and the chill of its night. Their feet are tough. They also have hair between the toes for extra protection. Because the desert tribes constantly traveled great distances, Salukis were found throughout the Middle East.
