Miniature Schnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer is a sweet, proud dog who loves to be the center of the household. He is devoted and playful. His special dignity shows in his whiskered face. He gets along well with people and other animals.

This German breed was created in the late nineteenth century by mixing small Standard Schnauzers
with Affenpinschers and Poodles. The versatile Miniature Schnauzer has a full supply of energy, and enjoys plenty of exercise. Although he's a small dog, he is not delicate. He makes a sturdy playmate for kids, and is an excellent watchdog, too.

The Miniature Schnauzer's salt and pepper or black coat requires regular professional grooming. The double coat--a hard, wiry outer coat with a velvety soft undercoat--needs professional attention every few months.

General Appearance: Active, alert, strong, resembling his larger cousin, the Standard Schnauzer, in general appearance.

Size, Proportion, and Substance: Height--12 to 14 inches at the withers.

Fun Facts

While Schnauzers were originally rat catchers, they do not share bloodlines or even country of origin with most of the other terriers. Most terriers come from Great Britain, but Miniature Schnauzers were developed in Germany. The Australian Terrier is the other terrier not from Great Britain.
