Manchester Terrier (Toy)

Owner's Guide

The Toy Manchester Terrier is a little dog with a terrier's nature. He's not the type to lounge around in laps. He'll happily charge around looking for activities and play. Gentle, consistent obedience training is good for his well-being and self-confidence. He can be shy around strangers.

The Toy Manchester Terrier is clearly descended from the original English Black and Tan Terriers. Coal miners in Manchester, Eng-land, wanted a dog for rat killing and rabbit chasing--two popular sports--so they bred the terrier with the Whippet to create the Manchester Terrier. Eventually a specific toy variety was established.

Like the Standard Manchester the Toy Manchester is glossy black with mahogany tan markings in various places over his body, including a small tan spot over each eye and one tan "kiss mark" on each cheek. No white, or any color other than black and tan, is allowed.

Excerpts from the Standard

General Appearance: The Toy is a small version of the Standard Manchester
Terrier, a small, black, short-coated dog, sleek, sturdy, yet elegant.

Size, Proportion, and Substance: Not exceeding 12 pounds.

Fun Facts

The Toy Manchester Terrier is a separate variety, but not a different breed, than the Standard Manchester Terrier. Toys should resemble Standards in all ways except for size and ears. Toys' ears should stand up naturally. Cropped or folded ears are not allowed.
