Lakeland TerrierDecember 18, 2008 4:28 PM

The Lakeland Terrier is frisky, feisty, and fun. He is a smart little dog who loves to be the center of his owner’s life. A person who understands this vivacious personality can have a lot of fun with a Lakeland. He’s got the energy and interest to play with kids tirelessly.

If the Lakeland seems to have a lot of determination, that’s because he comes from a long history of hardworking dogs. Even before fox hunting was a sport, farmers had to deal with foxes stealing their chickens. Farmers often gathered their hounds together with a group of Lakelands to hunt down their clever enemy.

Lakeland puppies are usually born dark and lighten to wheaten, red, blue, black, or liver. Some-times the hair has black tips, and sometimes the dog has a black “saddle” over his neck, back, sides, and tail. The double coat needs brushing twice weekly and shaping every few months.

Excerpts from the Standard

General Appearance: Sturdily built and narrow; self-confident; alert and ready to go.

Size, Proportion, and Substance: Height—males, 141/2 inches at the withers; females, about an inch shorter than males. Weight—males, 17 pounds; females slightly less.

Fun Facts

The Lakeland Terrier originated in the beautiful northern area of England known as the Lake District. This is where Beatrix Potter set her stories of Peter Rabbit and other animals. Some of her books feature terriers as characters. These include The Tale of Samuel Whiskers and The Tale of Ginger and Pickle.
