The Silky is a spunky sprite of a dog. He is a terrier, despite the fact that he belongs to the Toy Group. He has a strong sense of himself and is eager to protect his territory.

His ancestors’ original purpose was to kill rats and snakes in Australia. To make him better suited to apartment or city living, he was crossed with the tiny Yorkshire Terrier, whose coat is soft and silky. The resulting dog is the Silky Terrier—with the lustrous coat of the Yorkie, but a little larger and sportier.

The Silky is a smart dog, quick moving and quick thinking. He has an inquisitive nature and a zest for living. Obedience training is a good idea to keep him mindful of family rules.

The Silky’s beautiful coat needs only a few minutes’ daily grooming to keep it tangle-free. Scissoring is required every few months. The color is always the same, “blue” or silver-gray and tan. His coat is parted down the center of his back. He has dark, sparkling eyes and a black nose.

Fun Facts

During World War II, American and Canadian soldiers stationed in Australia were charmed by the Silky Terrier. They brought some Silkys back to the United States and began the interest in the breed that is now nationwide.
