The Rottweiler is bold, and an intelligent steady friend. They aim to accompany and guard. Their great strength should be channeled to positive activities. They love exercise and challenging outdoor sports.
The Rottweiler is originally descended from the Mastiff-type dogs of Asia, and is thought to have originated with the Romans, who brought the dog with them as a guard dog and drover, or cattle driver, on their expeditions across Europe. The Rottweiler is both a bold guardian and an intelligent, steady friend. But he is rather aloof, owing to his history as a hardworking drover and guardian. With his owner, though, he aims to accompany and guard with all his heart. His great strength should be channeled into positive activities. He loves exercise and will thrill to the challenges of any outdoor sports that include dog and owner. The Rottweiler’s coat, which needs brushing once a week, is always black with rust markings. Excerpts from the Standard General Appearance: A robust and powerful dog, showing great strength, agility, confidence, and endurance. Size, Proportion, and Substance: Height—males, 24 to 27 inches at the withers; females, 22 to 25 inches. Fun Facts The name of this breed comes from the town of Rottweil, Germany, where the dog was developed. Its meaning in German is “red tile,” because the town originally had a Roman settlement of red-tiled houses.
