Burmese carry surprising weight for their size and have often been described as “bricks wrapped in silk.” Their coats are very short, satin-like in texture, and generally require little grooming other than daily petting. Their fur comes in shades of sable, champagne, blue and platinum. Burmese also have large, expressive eyes that they can easily use to get attention and treats.

Burmese are extremely people-oriented and their personalities are almost dog-like. They like to follow their owners and to give and receive affection. Many Burmese delight their owners by learning to fetch. They love warm laps, being pet and curling up in bed with their owner.  Males tend to be a little more laid back and affectionate than females.

As kittens, Burmese are quite lively. They often seem clumsy and will attempt jumps and bounds beyond their ability. They stay playful well into adulthood.

As Burmese grow up, their individual personalities start to unfold. They are charming and intelligent, and like to be the boss of the household. Many Burmese “talk” to their owners, using soft voices (they are hardly ever loud). They are good with children, will tolerate the family dog, and if introduced to it at an early age, most will enjoy traveling in a car.

Burmese should never be let outdoors as they are entirely too trusting and have little, if any, survival instinct. Their idea of survival is to turn their eyes on you to attend to all their needs. However, this does not work for catching food, fighting off enemies or avoiding cars.
