The Spinone Italiano is a very kid-friendly family pet, being loyal and patient in nature, but should be socialized with other pets and people at a young age.
A large breed, Spinone Italiano's enjoy frequent walks at a relaxed pace, as well as hikes and hunting excursions, but don't require more than a small yard.
Appearance & Grooming
The breed's easy-to-maintain wiry coat can be found in white, white with orange markings, white with brown markings, orange roan, with or without orange markings, and brown roan with or without brown markings.
Large in size, full-grown Spinone Italiano's can measure between 23 and 25 inches in height and 65 to 85 pounds weight. The breed also has a tendency to leave a trail of water behind, due to an a rather wise-looking beard.
Personality, Temperament, & Exercise Needs
Happy to hunt and track, the Spinone Italiano isn't much of a guard dog. This is the dog for a family looking for an non-agressive, good-natured hiking and hunting companion.
Socialization & Training Needs
Spinone Italiano's should be socialized at a young age, and will end up with a very relaxed mood, although these dogs can have a bit of a stubborn side when it comes to training.

Named after an Italian thorn bush called pino, Spinone Italiano has very thick, tough skin enabling him to hunt in these bushes without getting harmed.
Known for a calm. laid-back attitude, the Spinone Italiano makes a natural family companion. This relaxed nature presumably stems from centuries of breeding as a hunting companion.
The breed is believed to have originated in Peidmont, Italy as far back as 500 B.C. but it is not known exactly what the origins are, although many believe the Spinone Italiano is a descendant of the now-extinct Spanish Pointer. Regardless, the breed is still a versatile gun dog, with a thick wiry coat that stands up against underbrush and cold water, patience and high intelligence.
These traits also make the breed an ideal therapy or companion animal. In addition, the Spinone Italiano is known for having a relaxed trot, unlike speedier hunting breeds, making this an ideal running partner for regular joggers.
Generally, they will grow to be somewhere between 23 and 25 inches in height and 65 to 85 pounds, but are happy with a few walks a day and a small yard.
