The Sloughi is a dog breed that originated in North Africa. While it is believed that the breed came from the area that is now Ethiopia, the history of this dog breed remains, for the most part, a mystery.
Originally, the Sloughi is thought to have been bred by the Berbers of North Africa to hunt game.
The Sloughi is a medium-sized Sighthound, whose graceful and elegant appearance is defined by the long and flat muscles that serve to distinguish it from being too similar to that of a Greyhound or Whippets. Additionally, the dog breed is recognized by its drooping ears and an expression often described as "melancholy."
As a Sighthound, the Sloughi can easily be distracted by things which grab its attention. As a result, when the dog is being exercised, they should remain on a leash or in a large fenced area.
In terms of personality, the Sloughi can be slightly reserved, becoming a little uncomfortable around strangers or those that they do not know well. They are, however, able to be trained into gentle and sociable dogs through positive reinforcement.
They are also notable dogs for their attitudes of class and grace, with a somewhat noble (though somewhat aloof) demeanor.
If the time and effort is put in, Sloughi's can make excellent companions for those who choose to make the breed their next pet.
