Pharaoh Hound

The Pharaoh Hound comes from Egypt. Pictures of him are on numerous tombs, showing that even in ancient times he was a companion and hunter. Pharaoh Hounds were buried with honor, as were their masters.

Sailing traders brought them from Egypt to the island of Malta, near Italy. There they continued to be rabbit hunters. The people loved them so much that they became the national dog of Malta, and a coin was made depicting a Pharaoh Hound.

These hounds are eager to please and can be trained easily. They get along well with other dogs. The Pharaoh Hound is a playful, active dog. He needs lots of exercise, loves attention and affection, and especially enjoys playing with children. He is an alert watchdog.

Fun Facts

The Pharaoh Hound's coat is a rich, warm tan color. His eyes are amber, and his nose is flesh-colored. And when the dog is really happy, his nose and eyes darken: He blushes and glows with excitement. This trait has been found in the Pharaoh dog for thousands of years. He is one of the oldest domesticated dogs in history.
