Best known as an ancient Italian guard dog, the Neapolitan Mastiff was once used in wars by the Roman army, and was rediscovered in the 1940s.
These huge dogs are natural defenders, not only due to an awe-inspiring size and shape, but also because of a natural tendency to prefer being around family. With that comes a wariness of strangers and a serious need for training and socialization early in life… before the dog gets bigger and stronger than you!
Naturally, Neapolitan Mastiffs are known for their size. The American Kennel Club breed standard is 26 to 31 inches in height for males and 24 to 29 inches for females. Average weight is 150 pounds for males and 110 pounds for females, but even greater weight is usual.
Since they’re human adult size, Neapolitan Mastiffs need some exercise daily, just like humans, but shouldn’t overdo it.
Their short coats are easy to care for, despite lots of wrinkles. But Neapolitan Mastiff owners need to OK with lots of drool.
