With their name derived from the Dutch word for "farmer", Boerboels are large mastiff dogs that were originally bred to protect the homesteads of African farmers. Their origins in Africa can be traced back to the 1600s, but even as late as the early 1920s various large mastiff-types were still being cross-bred with Boerboels in the region. Even in the present day, it's still not known exactly how many breeds were used in the creation of the Boerboel that give it the distinct features that we know today.
Those distinct Boerboel features include his large, muscular body, his blocky head and his short coat. But don't let this dog's seemingly bulky appearance fool you; of all of the mastiff-type dogs, Boerboels are easily the most agile. Their agility, in addition to making them a good defense against predators, helped make them excellent hunting companions.
Carrying its protective instincts from its origins to the present day, Boerboels are extremely family-oriented and loyal dogs. They are intelligent, and have a strong desire to please their owner. While the Boerboel can be aloof at times, he is, for the most part, calm and confident.
While the Boerboel can be an excellent companion, it should be noted that the breed is not right for first time owners, and does require a bit of work. Despite requiring minimal grooming, the breed needs early socialization and obedience training. Additionally, the large breed needs daily exercise.
If you are an experienced owner and can meet the needs of the Boerboel, this breed might be right for you!
