A woman has sued Petco after the wrongful death of her pet in a grooming accident.
I thank my lucky stars that I was chosen to be a servant to two Oriental Shorthair cats. In the same way the majority of shorthaired kitties are quite fastidious about their purrsonal grooming, ours are exemplary. In fact, our white Oriental Shorthair, Sir Hubble Pinkerton, will even occasionally place a highly determined paw on the top of my head and proceed go to town shampooing me to his satisfaction! Therefore, happily we have never been in need of the services of a professional kitty groomer.
There are a huge number of responsible pet grooming services throughout the country. These groomers not only take great pride in their profession, but they work very hard to maintain their excellent reputations. It is apparent they love taking care and beautifying their furry clients.
So I was quite disturbed the other day, when I ran across an article on Fox.com about California resident, Teresa Gilland, who is suing Petco after Sadie, her beloved Lhasa Apso, had to be euthanized following the tragic aftermath of a monthly grooming session at the store in Fair Oaks.
Sadie suffered heat stroke, burns, and internal bleeding while she was in a dryer cage that Petco groomers use. And even though she was rushed to the veterinary office later that evening, sadly she had to be euthanized due to the extensive injuries she received during the drying process.
"I couldn't have known,” Gillant said. “It never occurred to me that they were putting her in that kennel. It's nothing you can see . . . it's not out there for the public to see. It's an enclosed kennel, and they blow hot air in there."
It's been three years since Sadie died and Gilland has searched for two years to find an attorney who would take her case. This court case is the first of its kind in the United States. Fortunately, Gilland has the report in her possession written by the veterinarian who treated Sadie which documented that she had suffered “internal burn injuries and bleeding caused by heat."
Apparently there has been quite a controversy concerning cage dryers. Gilland is also trying to get cage driers banned, and strongly suggests groomers who are using them should be mandated to post cautionary warnings about them for their customers.
In regard to Sadie’s death, Petco issued the following statement:
“We've been aware of Sadie's story since it happened three years ago. We can't comment on the case, as it's currently in litigation, but it was a tragic loss and we take all issues of pet safety very seriously. Over the last few years, we've made a number of improvements in the grooming equipment we use and we are always seeking to improve our existing safety practices. One of those improvements is that we no longer use heat of any kind in the drying process in our grooming salons.”
Of course Sadie made the ultimate sacrifice in helping to prevent the needless death of any other animals. I do hope that Gilland can take some small comfort knowing that Petco is taking the necessary action to further ensure the safety of the pets they “pamper” while they are being groomed.

Wow, this is so sad. I used to take my dogs to groomers but decided to do grooming at home after my mini schnauzer went to groomers and came home with fleas. I agree it is a time that we get to bond and I can assess if anything is wrong with their skin and coat. Plus I like the prancing that the k9s do afterward.
Its sad for the dog and owner. But , I have seen many issues with the petco stores and this is why i would never go there again. They also sell reptiles that they themselves havent taken the time to learn there real needs much less tell anyone how to care for them.Take your pet to be groomed at your vet if you dont do it yourself.
Whenever I wash or groom my dog, i leave her to dry in the natural temperature without heat.
I'm a sticker for being present while my dog is groomed. If they won't let me stay, they're not getting my business! As a consumer you have EVERY right to ask questions about how things are done and see the premises. It took me a LONG time to find the right groomer but the peace of mind was worth it.
No one will ever treat your pet with the care and respect that you do. Yes, doing the work yourself can sometimes be difficult and time consuming but it's also rewarding. I will never use a grooming service because my pet is worth the time and effort I put into doing it myself.
-My deepest sympathy to Sadie's owner,...it must have been an unbearable situation and loss. May God keep little Sadie close and cared for as she deserves. This is a logical lawsuit and the situation should be treated with the same respect as the loss of a human under such conditions. I can't imagine how/why the groomers let this horrible act of neglect happen to poor little Sadie,..my heart is so very pained for the puppy,...it is beyond imaginable horror!!!
I could NOT resist replying to this article!!!! Pet stores claim the groomers are trained graduates from grooming schools. Yes they might be but that does NOT mean they are qualified to groom your pet. I would avoid any kind of grooming at a pet store. But keep in mind your pet could also be abused as well with a private groomer. I have heard horror stories about pet abuse at private groomers such as hitting, yanking and things even worse. Has your pet ever come back with blood shot eyes???? This could be a sign that the dog was possibly hung by the noose they used to control it on the table. CHECK OUT your groomer very well before you take your pet. Ask to watch the grooming in progress a few times before you leave your pet unattended with them. Your pet will be there for who knows how many hours before you pick them up. Who knows what they will be exposed to while they are there. Yes there are great groomers out there but YOU have to look hard and long to find one you can trust your pet to.
