Why is my cat drinking so much water?

Q: Our cat is male and 17 years old. Lately he cannot get enough water. He drinks twice as much water as he used to. Why is my cat drinking so much water?

A: Wondering why your cat is drinking so much water?

Increased thirst in cats often does indicate an underlying metabolic disease.

Some of the most common causes are hyperthyroidism, diabetes, and renal disease.

There are, however, other illnesses that can cause your pet to drink more water. Most of the causes of your cat's increased thirst can be diagnosed by your veterinarian with diagnostics such as blood work and X-rays.

I agree with you Aleta, my cat is 16 and is the same way. He is fine and acts normal. he eats and goes to the bathroom and I am with you the vets change an outrageous amount. You go in and they say he needs every test in the book!!!!! I love my cat and am a responsible pet owner but the vets charges are out of this world. They are more than humans!!!!!

My cat is drinking tons of water. He is 18. Otherwise, he seems happy and healthy. The last time I took him to the vets, it cost me $400! I won't be taking him again UNLESS I see he's in pain...and then I will probably have him put down. Do veterinarians realize how absurdly expensive they are? They charge ridiculous fees for little stuff. They are preventing animals from getting the care they may need because most people, esp. nowadays, cannot AFFORD to pay hundreds of dollars on their animals! Vets, surely, are laughing all the way to the bank.
