Whoopi Goldberg of ABC's The View has adopted a rescue cat from the New York area.

Hollywood heroine and TV star of ABC's The View has shown she has a soft spot despite a sometimes tough demeanor. News broke yesterday that Whoopi Goldberg has become one of the many people that choose to adopt a cat each year.

The feline Goldberg fell for, a Russian Blue named Verrazano by those who found him (she's calling him Vinny), is a cat who comes from extraordinary circumstances. Back in July of this year, the cat survived a harrowing ordeal in which a still unknown person senselessly threw the cat out of the window of a moving car on the Verrazano Bridge (hence the cat's name).

After the incident, the cat was rescued by Animal Care & Control, and then got a chance to meet the media, appearing on ABC's The View. On the set, Goldberg fell for the feline, and afterwards applied as one of the 140 hopefuls that would be able to adopt the cat.

Yesterday, Animal Care & Control granted Whoopi's wish, and awarded the cat to Goldberg.

Isn't it nice to see this cat travel from bad circumstances into the lap of luxury?

I knew the day I saw Whoopie and "Vinny" on the View, she would adopt the kitten. Oliver has been top cat for a long time. Congrats to all! Jodeek

I rescued at kitten 2 months ago that was either thrown or fell out of a car on an interstate bridge in front of me. At first I thought someone had hit a blackbird as I swerved around it but then saw its tail. I backed up several hundred feet in the emgergency lane to reach it as it had been dodging card and semis for a couple of minutes. It had a broken leg in two place and a torn urethra. While it is awaiting surgery at six months of age, I drain his urine from a tube in his tummy to his bladder every 2-3 hours. Still dont know if he can be repaired, so still facing the chance of having to put him to sleep. Gonna be hard cuz I love "Roadie" like a child. I wish more people would adopt cats and dogs instead of buying pedigrees. Stays make the best pets.

Yes, it is wonderful, and I wish it was more widely publicized. I also hope and pray Ms. Goldberg adopts for life and ensures the very best of care for all of the cats she adopts. Cats are the nation's and the world's most beloved companions, for a plethora of good reasons, and many of us want to see this publicized to put the lie to the endless pushing of dogs down our throats.
