What is Feline AIDS?

Feline AIDS can be transmitted via bite wounds from infected cats.

Q: I keep hearing about feline AIDS. What is this and how do cats get it? Is my family at risk?

A:   Feline AIDS or feline immunodeficiency virus is closely related to the human virus. This virus, like the human version, causes immunosuppression in cats and does shorten their life expectancy.

Fortunately, humans cannot be infected with feline AIDS.

The mode of transmission of feline AIDS is via bite wounds from infected cats. Intact (unspayed) male cats are more prone to fight and are therefore a significant source of disease. If you allow your cat to go outside, he or she can only become infected if another cat that has feline AIDS bites your cat.

The best way to prevent this is to keep your cat inside. If your cat is strictly indoors, in which case there is little reason to worry. Be sure to have all cats in your home tested for feline AIDS. Also, before your bring home a new cat have him or her tested before introducing him to your cat. Your veterinarian can do this for you with a simple blood test.

I am in France. I have 5 cats taht go outside. They have all their injections. There have been a semi wild cat taht has been haging in my garden of course I felt sorry for the cat and was feeding him a bit further. Today I cought him and drove him to SPA in south of France I ask to pay add for teh AIDS test, neutered... I found out that they operated him and force me to take him back and release him outside. this cat is wild no one can approach him. I am now worried sick had drama at the spa. They charged 100 Euros and keep the cat told me that he was going to go somewhere would not tell me where I would prefer to know that his suffering are over than to see him at the end of my garden or at the bins. I feel bad I even know he had aids now thanks to spa made me feel terrible to think he should be put asleep most go tomorrow with my 5 cats to ensure taht they don't have aids

My cat was only about 12 mths old and l have just had him put to sleep about a week ago, he had feline aids lueke my question is should l of seen the signs of it, and l have another cat who is older hes 5 to 6 yrs old should l have him tested for it as my younger cat did use to play with my older cat and some times my older cat use to bit him as they did not really get on the older of the two just tolerated him and tried to stay away from him. The vet at the pdsa said that he should be ok it worries me that he may have it and l could not bare to think of losing him hes a very loving cat.
