What Could Be the Cause of my Dog Urinating while Asleep?

A: It is very possible that your dog may have a urinary tract infection. Your veterinarian can check a urine sample for you. Your dog should also have blood work check to rule out kidney problems and other metabolic diseases that can cause urinary incontinence. If all of these tests come back normal your vet may want to try a medication that tightens the bladder muscles and helps her control her urine. Urinary incontinence can occur in spayed females and just needs a medication to solve the problem.

The first thing that dog owners must understand is that there are many causes of inappropriate urination in the dog. Pinning down the cause is often half the battle, since identifying the problem helps us to select the appropriate treatment and greatly increase the odds of its success.-Jonathan Berkowitz

I have a 4 month old boxer and unlike my female Boston he will pee in the kennel while he is laying down I don't know if he does it while he asleep or awake he also seems to pee while just lying around the house he has done this more then once. Another thing he was walking behind me and he peed on my leg but he was just walking calmly but still peeing as if he didn't even notice it what could be causing this occurrence?

my boxer was spayed tuesday and i have just bent down to chekc her stiches and she had wee'd whilst asleep. she hadn't even realised she had done it, it didn't look or smell like urine. i am taking he ro vets in the morning but am panicking cause just been on another forum and really but the frightners up me, saying she will be on medication for rest of her life and my own fault for having her spayed. etc etc. Obviously they have issues with what i thought was me being a sensible dog owner as i have a male dog and did not want puppies. Can someone pleas put my mind at ease.

I have a spayed (registered) Chinese Crested Powderpuff. She is now 7 years old. Until we rescued her three years ago, she was a "breeder". Lately, she has begun to urinate while resting or sleeping. I have gone out with her when she goes...I do not see any signs of discomfort. When we walk her with our Great Pyrenees dogs, she more than happily "marks" everything they do. Would she do this if she had an infection? Need help. She also went blind approx. 1 year ago....both eyes, one actually removed.

My 7 mo Rottie was just spayed and seems to having the same problem. It's been a month and every time she gets up from sleeping there is a puddle. The vet put her on antibiotics for 10 days that didn't help so it was not a uti. Now she is on Diethylstibestrol(DES)for 5 days. That seemed to help for awhile but now it is back on certain days. I am taking her back to the vet to see what the next step is. She thinks she is not creating enough hormones since her ovaries and uterus were removed but the adrenal gland suppose to kick in and do that but sometimes does not do it enough. I think she may try a new med but after that I am insisting on a urine test to rule out crystals etc that may be the problem.

Hi June, If your Crestie is acting normal and not urinating inside while she is awake and active and relieves herself as usual on walks she may have a urinary tract infection. That means that she just can't control it when she's sleeping. A quick trip to the vet can help you figure it out.
