What Is Causing My Dog To Have Swollen Gums?

A: It sounds like Bailey may have gingivitis. This is inflammation of the gums and it can accompany dental disease. If Bailey also has tartar and plaque build up on the teeth your veterinarian may wish to have them cleaned. This procedure does require anesthesia for your pet but it is an extremely thorough cleaning that enables your veterinarian to clean under the gum line.

Daily brushing is of course a great idea and can help prevent gingivitis from coming back. Dental treats and carrots are also a great way to keep the teeth clean! Check out my "How to Brush your Pet's Teeth" video for tips on brushing Bailey's teeth at home.
