Q: What are some common stroke symptoms in dogs?

A: While strokes can occur in dogs and cats it is far less common than in humans. Strokes can be definitively diagnosed with advanced imaging in veterinary referral centers. Before this type of imaging is done, your pet should be examined by a veterinarian. Simple blood tests and x-rays may identify another problem that is causing this to happen to your pet.

Dog was walking down stairs and leaned against the wall and is now unable to walk or won't try. Is not panting and urinated after this incident. Was out many time before this and did not urinate. Any suggestions?

Should have been Nutri Cal, not Nutra Cal, sorry, my mistake.

I am certain my 13 year old Shih Tzu had a stroke 5 days ago. He would not eat for 3 and one half days(over a weekend of course). Head tilted to the right couldn't walk or stand straight, slept a lot. Started him on Nutra Cal from the vet, 2 hours later he was eating, not a whole lot but some. Also put pedialyte in his water seemed to really help. Today he ate 2 whole hot dogs(his favorite people food), cut up, and some chicken. He is really drinking the water with the pedialyte (fruit flavor). Seems to really be working. He is walking much better and giving me hope. Couldn't get the Nutra Cal in his mouth, so started putting a little on his nose, he would lick it off, it worked. For his weight I am to give him 2 tablespoons a day, in several small amounts. A vet friend told me that his sugar might have been too low(from not eating), therefore he would not/could not eat. I should have known this as I dealt with my mother in law who was a diabetic and we had to use similar methods (not Nutra Cal of couse), to bring her around and get her sugar level up then give her something to eat. This gives me hope as I thought I would have to put my Shih Tzu down and was extremely upset about this. Am crossing my fingers that he continues to improve more each day.
