What Are The Symptoms of a Dog Having a Stroke?

Q: What are the symptoms of a dog having a stroke?Q: What are the symptoms of a dog having a stroke?

A: While strokes can occur in dogs and cats it is far less common than in humans. Strokes can be definitively diagnosed with advanced imaging in veterinary referral centers. Before this type of imaging is done, your pet should be examined by a veterinarian. Simple blood tests and x-rays may identify another problem that is causing this to happen to your pet.

This post is an update to my comment, below, about my dog, Tucker. Six months since the stroke and he is still making progress. His bark came back a month ago. Kidney function is off a bit, so he drinks more water and consequently needs to pee more frequently, but we've all adjusted. Tucker is a rescue dog; his age is likely between 12 and 14. We treasure every day with him.

so I was searching the net about dogs and strokes and saw a lot of inquiries about peopel who have dogs that appear to have some kind of seizure instead. My labradoodle has been having seizures since 2 years of age. He is now 7 and we've only had 2 in the last 2 years. Changed his diet! To an all natural diet. And feed more often, like he's diabetic or hypoglycemis. Ask me how!

My springer spaniel, Tucker, had two strokes within 48 hours in August 0f 2011. The first was relatively mild, with head tilt, falling over, and walking in circles. The second was more severe. He couldn't stand up and couldn't eat for days. I almost gave up, but hung in with him as he gradually improved over the next 10 days. Two months later, he is 90 percent recovered. Only slight balance issues remain; you would never know he suffered a major stroke. Some dogs do recover! Have hope!

SYMPTOMS: the dog will all of a sudden start running back and forth really fast, then its what they call "circling". The dog will just keep going in circles. Panting, cant sit still, constant circling (going in circles in one direction only). This can go on for up to 48 hours, until sedated with diazepam, then a regimen of prednisone. Most dogs that have had suffered a stroke heal very fast, often within weeks. Much different then a human. They are often back to normal, and may not ever have another one. Its devastating to watch and be there with them.

It happened to my dog. I cant convey the feeling of helplessness. I stayed with in this state of the art animal hospital in Irvine Ca, stayed with her next to her kennel, and just wanted to see her sedated and relaxed until she got better. Its heartbreaking, you think there dying, but she healed so fast and is back to normal.
