Watch Out, Today is Friday the 13th!
Published August 13, 2010
I generally consider myself to be a helpful person, so I thought it would be extremely wise of me to remind anyone who is deeply superstitious that today is Friday the 13th.
To prevent accidents or other mishaps, some people go to tremendous extremes on this particular day. So, to anyone cowering in the corner or afraid to walk under a ladder today, I offer some major consolation. I am happy to report that in year 2010, August is the only month in which this day occurs. Personally I am glad to get it over with.
And for anyone who suffers from friggatriskaidekaphobia (the fear of Friday the 13th), here is a bit of interesting trivia to make mental preparations a lot easier for this day. The fearsome Friday the 13th occurs at least once, but no more than three times a year. But if a month starts on a Sunday, any month's 13th day will fall on a Friday. Amazing, isn't it?
According to studies concerning the risk of accidents on the unlucky Friday the 13, some conflicting and lucky reports exist. Based on a report by the Dutch Centre for Insurance Statistics, "Fewer accidents and reports of fire and theft occur when the 13th of the month falls on a Friday than on other Fridays, because people are preventatively more careful or just stay home".
While humans may avoid driving or leaving the safety of one's' home like the plague, I am almost positive that our darling pets could give a hoot whether the 13th of a month falls on a Friday or any other day for that matter.
What I do know for a fact is that the bad rap black cats receive, especially on this day, is totally unwarranted. This entertaining little video uploaded to YouTube by MarianHH proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that as far as superstitions are concerned, our little furry friends could care less! So get out and have some fun today. But please don't walk under the ladder in front of my house!
