Update: Over 100 Former Lab Beagles Find Homes
Published July 23, 2010
Fourteen days after the dramatic rescue of 120 abandoned beagles, Pets Alive's "Beagle Mania" adoption event finally draws to a close. According to an update on their site, as of Friday, only 15 adorable beagles remain in the shelter.
For the last few weeks, pet lovers intently followed the series of articles recounting the valiant effort on July 2 to save these pups from a bankrupt animal testing laboratory. Organizations including Pets Alive, Best Friends Animal Society, Win Animal Rights, and dozens of volunteers scrambled to find homes for the beagles after they were found behind the laboratory's locked doors.
But the frantic work by Pets Alive and Monhagen Animal Hospital to prepare the beagles for adoption proved well worth the effort. Mostly, the organizations' staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to alter the dogs and treat them for dental work. The preparations yielded a hefty veterinarian tab, which was willingly paid by Best Friends.
The six truckloads of beagles were immediately snatched up by pet lovers as they raced to sign the application forms. And the owners of the adopted beagles are thrilled.
Although the beagles were initially unaccustomed to the feeling of fresh grass against their paws, now, they run around freely, chasing balls and baying happily. The owners managed to house-train them in a matter of a few days, and the dogs have proven themselves as great company around adults, kids, and other pets. According to ohmidog, even the shiest beagle, a female named Millie, has found a warm, happy home.
Pets Alive remains confident that the 15 remaining beagles will be placed in homes by this week.
