Trends in Naming a Pet

What's trending when it comes to cat and dog names? Find out more!

When was the last time you met a Rover, Fido or Mittens? Clearly, those cat and dog names are passe. So what's hot to replace Spot?

Taking a close look at the list, today's top cat and dog names are more likely to sound like human names rather than traditional pet monikers. A few of the top 10 pet names even appear on the Social Security Administration's list of most common baby names. Isabella (Bella) is number four for girls, and Sophia ranks ninth on both the SSA's list and VPI's cat name list.

"The continuing popularity of Max is largely due to the fact that it is monosyllabic and simple for people and pets to remember, yet easy to distinguish from common commands," said Dr. Carol McConnell, vice president and chief veterinary officer for VPI. "Plus, it's a fitting name for an active, energetic pet."

There's a reasonable theory to support this new naming tendency. Pets are family, now more than ever before.

Consider these findings from a pet owner survey conducted by the American Animal Hospital Association; 93 percent of pet parents would risk their own life for a pet; 40 percent of pets sleep in our bed; and half of us carry a pet photo in our wallet!

"The prevalence of pets with human names clearly reflects the growing human-animal bond," added McConnell.

But not all pet parents run with the pack when it comes to choosing a nom de plume for pets. Ask them how they decided on a name, and you'll likely hear a special story.

When the Rotunda family from Parker Colorado arrived home with their new Golden-Doodle puppy last winter, three-year old Jett exclaimed, "Her name is Soupy".

"I thought he meant 'Snoopy', but he corrected me," recalls Jett's mom, Stephanie Rotunda, "We don't know where it came from but it stuck".

Sometimes it's cat names and dog names are inspired by the credo name-at-first-sight.

'Reina' means princess in Spanish. "It had to be her name," recalls Jennifer Almodovar of Tampa Florida. "The way she was sleeping when I first saw her--she looked like a little princess."

Other times, pets are named in honor of people we admire.

"Yogi got his name because of our love for baseball," beams Lanie Maes of Denver Colorado. "He's named after Yogi Berra and he's a pug, so he has a smooshed face just like Yogi Berra"!

Regardless of your motivation, remember that you're labeling cat or dog names need to last a lifetime. It's a good idea to be creative and thoughtful about the name you select.

i've got 2 cats and 2 dogs, only one of the dogs had a name before i got him. Bandit was already named when i got him, though i was told he was named for the movies "Smokey and the Bandit" ... my orange kitty is Andie. she's named after a male chow/shepherd mix. ... my black kitty is Spooky the Vampire Kitty, because he's shy and has extra long fangs. i'm told this is probably because someplace in his genetic background there's Himalayan, but you couldn't prove that by me because he looks like a full blood Burmese to me. ... and last, but certainly not least, is my little cocker/lab mix Ember. she's named after a comicbook character in the Elfquest stories.

beagle named maddox, black kitty named Miss Pants, orange tabby named BunBun (his tail was broken when he was tiny so it curls around and looks like a bunny tail), and a white kitty newly named Kitty Galore. lol.

My first lab I named Diego because I happened to be watching Mask of Zorro when I first got him. This was years before that name became wildly popular. My new lab's name is Wyatt, named for the cowboy. As a person who has a name that has been frequently reffered to as a dog's name back in the 80's and 90's. I am glad to see people names are becomnig more common and happily my name is becoming less common for dogs!

Boomer the Cocker Spaniel, my 2 and 1/2 year old canine companion was named before he came home from the farm where he was born, before I was sure he was "the one" and by a friend who lives 1600 miles away and unfortunately will probably never meet this wonderful creature. People ask if he was named after the "Baby Boomer" generation and while it is true I do refer to Boomer as my "Baby Boomer" even to this day, his name was actually confirmed by his "booming" out of his crate at the farm into my arms as if to say ... "I've been waiting for you, Daddy, for a LONG time, so take me home" !

I have a Brussels Griffon named Chewbacca after the Star Wars character. I am not a Star Wars fan but one look at him and I don't know if I could call him anything else. I do call him Chewy for short. He is just a love and full of energy. I just lost my Siberian Husky of eleven years and his name was Nanook. He was my best friend , I was without a dog for 1 week when Chewy came into my life and I swear Nanook found him for me because he didn't want me to be lonely..... Thanks Buddy. I still cry almost everyday over my loss of Nanook but Chewy helps fill the void. I love him too Thank God I have him....
