Trends in Naming a Pet

What's trending when it comes to cat and dog names? Find out more!

When was the last time you met a Rover, Fido or Mittens? Clearly, those cat and dog names are passe. So what's hot to replace Spot?

Taking a close look at the list, today's top cat and dog names are more likely to sound like human names rather than traditional pet monikers. A few of the top 10 pet names even appear on the Social Security Administration's list of most common baby names. Isabella (Bella) is number four for girls, and Sophia ranks ninth on both the SSA's list and VPI's cat name list.

"The continuing popularity of Max is largely due to the fact that it is monosyllabic and simple for people and pets to remember, yet easy to distinguish from common commands," said Dr. Carol McConnell, vice president and chief veterinary officer for VPI. "Plus, it's a fitting name for an active, energetic pet."

There's a reasonable theory to support this new naming tendency. Pets are family, now more than ever before.

Consider these findings from a pet owner survey conducted by the American Animal Hospital Association; 93 percent of pet parents would risk their own life for a pet; 40 percent of pets sleep in our bed; and half of us carry a pet photo in our wallet!

"The prevalence of pets with human names clearly reflects the growing human-animal bond," added McConnell.

But not all pet parents run with the pack when it comes to choosing a nom de plume for pets. Ask them how they decided on a name, and you'll likely hear a special story.

When the Rotunda family from Parker Colorado arrived home with their new Golden-Doodle puppy last winter, three-year old Jett exclaimed, "Her name is Soupy".

"I thought he meant 'Snoopy', but he corrected me," recalls Jett's mom, Stephanie Rotunda, "We don't know where it came from but it stuck".

Sometimes it's cat names and dog names are inspired by the credo name-at-first-sight.

'Reina' means princess in Spanish. "It had to be her name," recalls Jennifer Almodovar of Tampa Florida. "The way she was sleeping when I first saw her--she looked like a little princess."

Other times, pets are named in honor of people we admire.

"Yogi got his name because of our love for baseball," beams Lanie Maes of Denver Colorado. "He's named after Yogi Berra and he's a pug, so he has a smooshed face just like Yogi Berra"!

Regardless of your motivation, remember that you're labeling cat or dog names need to last a lifetime. It's a good idea to be creative and thoughtful about the name you select.

My Morkie puppy is named EMERIL, like the chef. The day I brought him home, I made a stop at WalMart to pick up some essentials for him. When I got back in the car, the sun shone on his eyes and I saw they were a beautiful emerald green color. Emerald as a name didn't sound manly enough, so I went with Emeril. Sometimes I call him Emeril Lagasse or the Chef. Or Mr. Stinky Butt. I love him. He's a real stinker!

I have 3 dogs. Minnie, my papillon, came with the name Minnie, so I didn't name her. At one time I was going to change her name to Mindy, but I decided against it. Odessa, my longcoat chihuahua, got her name from a freeway sign. We saw it on our way to Idaho one day and it said the town of Odessa was 3 miles one way, and another town called Lindstatler (or something like that) was 5 miles in the opposite direction. When we saw that sign we decided our next dog would be named "Odessa Lindstatler". We simply call her "Dessa". Vegas is Odessa's baby, and I named him after an INXS song called "Pretty Vegas".

Currently have Ruby Shaboo, known as "Meanie Beanie" as she is a nasty ol' cuss, 16 1/2 yo (black cat)...then there is Angus (full name: Olde Angus Hogandingle McBean Bennett EINSTEIN), my favorite (if you can say that out loud) who is a stout and somewhat portly little gentleman, dachshund, red shorthair, approx. 6-7yo, shelter rescue, he oinks and snuffles and snores (even while awake)...Bella, the $650 AKC wirehair "wheaton" dachshund that is more strawberry blonde and often mistaken for a yorkie mix...GRRRRR!!! LOL (she is 3yo)If she is not yapping at something outside, chasing butterflies, eating cat poo, OBSESSSING over her B-A-L-L, or peeing somewhere in the house, she is sitting up in the begging position for what might be really long periods of time, looking for a cuddle. (Sometimes when I am reading I will get up to get a water, etc, and there she is, silently sitting upright, staring at me) And last but not least of my motley crew is JOHNNY JUMP UP! Yes, the exclamation point is part of his name! Another black cat, as soft as velvet, big green/gold eyes and a BIG sense of himself, which is mostly all about the humor and stirring things up. He can jump straight up in the air about 5 ft from a stance. Almost everywhere he goes, he jumps. This appears to be his specialty, hence the name. He was found playing in traffic in the middle of a busy street by my house, along with his two siblings, who were adopted by a good friend. We gauge them to be somewhere in the 6-7 month range. There have been many before these guys, and I remember each and every one. I always say this to humans, and I'm only HALF kidding, don't YOU and "fill in the critter name here" fall into the pool and commence to drown, 'cuz I'll rescue the dog/cat first. And I can't even swim...LOL! :)
