Celebrities aren't the only ones making headlines with their scandals -- their pets are, too! As the press covers their every move, the world watches as their drama arises. Its no surprise that their pampered pooches end up famous in their own right, as their owners tote them around town. When you're the animal of an A-lister, you always have to be red carpet ready.
Unfortunately, actors, actresses, musicians, and models have super busy schedules which put their pets on a temporary backburner. So what stars are responsible owners and which have been surrounded in canine controversy? Read more to find out. Just a warning, the answers may surprise you!
Vanessa Williams
Dog: A Yorkie named Enzo
Fun Facts: Vanessa is a supporter of the Animal Haven Shelter in Soho, NY and helped to launch their Bring Pets Home Microchipping Initiative in October 2007, a few months after her own pet scandal occurred. She has four children who all help out with their pet responsibilities.
Scandal: Vanessa William's Yorkshire Terrier, Enzo, was stolen from the fenced in yard of her suburban New York home on Memorial day, 2007 fueling rumors of a celebrity dog-napper. Earlier in the day Vanessa had seen a suspicious van driving by her house, but police suggested a hungry coyote had gotten to Enzo instead. Thankfully, Vanessa's dog had been implanted with a microchip called HomeAgain that helps reunite lost pets with their owners. Vanessa was so distraught over her pup's disappearance, she enlisted the help of a psychic to find out whether he was still alive or not. Little Enzo was located all the way in Connecticut by a veterinarian who scanned the pooch and found the microchip ID. Microchipping is quickly becoming an important way for helping pet owners find their lost pets. A veterinarian can insert the chip in pets of all sizes during an office visit. Cats can also be tagged!
Paris Hilton
Dog: She now has 17 dogs! (Mostly Chihuahuas).
Fun Facts: Paris Hilton's most famous dog is named Tinkerbell, however, now-a-days she can be seen carrying more than one pooch and has commented she has about 17 dogs right now! She recently said her dogs keep having babies and she feels bad about giving them away. The heiress has also paid to have a doggy mansion built to look exactly like her Los Angeles home - on the outside and inside! This doggy mansion sits in her backyard, has a chandelier, and furniture that is an exact replica of what she owns in her luxurious home.
Scandal: Her dog Tinkerbell, went missing August 11, 2004. The hotel heiress was willing to pay a pretty penny for Tinkerbell's safe return, upping the reward from $1,000 to $5,000 when she posted signs all over Los Angeles on Tuesday with a picture of herself and Tinkerbell with the message, "Please help. This dog is like a child to me." At first, Hilton family personal assistant Wendy White claimed the missing pup was her dog Napoleon, a ruse to throw off any potential kidnappers from holding the real missing pooch for ransom. Thankfully, Tinkerbell was returned to Ms. Hilton and her happy home (though not many details about where or how she was found were ever released).
Courtney Love
Dogs: a Pomeranian named Princess Pep and Ronnie
Fun Facts: Courtney was devastated after the death of her late husband, Kurt Cobain, and she quickly spiraled downward in the public eye. More recently, she has gotten her act together and is happily spending time with her daughter, Frances Bean, and her dogs.
Scandal: Courtney's previous Pomeranian died in 2002 because it ate one of her breast implants. Through a publicist, Love explained to the New York Post that she had the implants removed some years ago, but kept them as souvenirs. She's not sure what was in them, because "they were bootleg implants from Mexico." She was devastated over the loss.
She came under fire again after she failed to collect her pet dog Lloyd from the vet -- after dropping him off in March 2005. According to sources, Love took the 13-year-old German Shepherd mix to California's Beverly Hills Small Animal Hospital after he suffered a stroke, and she left him there. Star magazine had published a contact number for readers interested in adopting Lloyd. Since she has not been spotted with Lloyd since, we can only hope that he's now in a happy home.
Ellen DeGeneres
Dog: A Brussels Griffon mix terrier named Iggy
Fun Facts: When Ellen first adopted Iggy, he didn't get along well with her cats, so she got him neutered and enrolled him in pet training. Relations got so bad between her cats and Iggy that she knew she had to find him a better place to live. Ellen also became part owner of an all-natural pet care company named Halo, Purely for Pets in 2008.
Scandal: Ellen DeGeneres and girlfriend Portia de Rossi adopted a Brussels Griffon mix from a local rescue called Mutts and Moms. In October of 2007 the couple decided that the puppy, Iggy, was too much for their home and gave the puppy to a Ellen's hairstylist. The rescue has a "no right to transfer" clause in the contract that was signed by the couple. Many rescues have this clause and ask that pets be returned to the rescue if the family is no longer able to keep them. This became a controversy when the rescue confiscated the dog from DeGeneres's friend and adopted little Iggy to a new family. After Ellen discussed the incident on her show, Mutts and Moms began receiving death threats from outraged fans of Ellens.
Gisele Bundchen
Dog: A Yorkie named Vida
Fun Facts: Vida means "life" in Portuguese. One of Gisele's favorite things to do is walk her dog and she has been quoted saying this about her love for animals, "I love horses. If I could, I would ride the whole day. When I get married, I'll live in the countryside, ride on horses and live among cows, chickens and dogs."
Scandal: In 2004, Gisele offered a reward of $5,000 after her pet yorkie went missing. She posted anonymous reward posters all over Hollywood of the missing pup, reportedly following advice from Paris Hilton. A couple found Vida near Los Angeles and safely returned her. However, that night the couple were arrested at gunpoint by 3 detectives and brought to the police station for further questioning. They were cleared and released after the police explained that Ms. Bundchen reported them for "pet theft." The couple never did receive a reward from Gisele.
