Your furry friend can help you find love. Here are 10 ways your dog can connect you with potential lovers.
Top 10 Ways Dog Lovers Can Find Love
While vacationing last month, I saw two dogs playing fetch by the beach. I approached the owner and offered to throw the ball. As the dogs ran into the waves to fetch, I chatted with the owner, a handsome paddle board instructor. I told him about the puppy waiting for me back home and how much his shepherd mix reminded me of her. If I didn’t have to leave the next day, I would’ve agreed to meet him for another beach outing. Nothing came out of the chance meeting with a fellow dog lover, but it gave me hope that my dog could lead me to love one day.
Dogs are loyal, loving and always willing to listen. While it is important to have these traits in a companion, sharing interests is key to having a healthy and lasting relationship. When you meet someone who adores animals just as much as you do, you know you are in for a treat.
Here are 10 ways for dog lovers to connect with potential lovers-
1. Dog Parks
Dog parks are great places to meet dog lovers in a city. Go often and arrive at peak times such as in the evenings or weekends. While letting your dog socialize, make conversation with fellow park visitors. You’ll have plenty to talk about from the tricks Fido has up his sleeve to his favorite treats. If you hit it off, suggest a doggie play date. Or ask if you can add their dog to the Barkin’ Buddy iPhone application to stay connected for future outings.
2. Beaches and Hiking Trails
If you and your dog love to be active outdoors, join a hiking group on Meetup. Better yet, find a dog friendly beach for running along the shore. Dogs make perfect icebreakers. While not everyone hitting the trails or enjoying beach time has a dog, you are likely to attract someone who shares your interest.
3. Animal Shelter
Volunteering at a local shelter will give you a chance to meet other do-gooders and will help you scope out interesting candidates who come in to adopt. Someone compassionate and willing to make a lifetime commitment to an animal is surely someone to consider for a long-term relationship. For tips on volunteering at shelters, click here.
4. Fundraising Events
Fundraising events organized by animal rescue groups and shelters may not specifically be singles events, but odds are at least half the attendees are single. Sign up for your local rescue group and shelter’s email lists so you’ll know when to go.
5. Dog Walks for Charity
Nearly every city has a dog walk for charity scheduled. Dog walks are usually no more than 5K and bring people from all walks of life to raise funds for a good cause. There will be food, entertainment, contests, and hundreds of dogs and their two legged friends all rallied together for the greater good. For charity dog walks near you, click here.
6. Leashes and Lovers
For less than 10 bucks a month, you can join this social club that helps connect members with a date, a new friend, or even your soul mate. Leashes and Lovers also arranges meetings and outings for singles. Membership perks include dog training guides, tips on speed dating and how to keep the romance alive. You don’t have to be a dog owner to join.
7. At the Vet
There is nothing wrong with dreaming of dating a vet who can be at your beck and call whenever your pet needs a checkup. After all, vets are knowledgeable, accessible, and they absolutely love animals. If the resident vet is already taken, no worries, there will be plenty of chances to connect with other dog owners and even the friendly staff on your visits.
8. Breed Specific Groups
Whether you are a proud owner of a pit bull or a doting pug lover, there are always ways to meet others who share your passion. Search for dog groups related to your dog’s breed either on Facebook or Meetup. You’ll see quite a few groups to choose from.
9. Coffee Shop
If the weather cooperates, take your furry friend to the nearest coffee shop that offers outside seating. Get your caffeine fix while indulging in people watching. Don’t shy away from chatting up an interested stranger that pets your dog.
10. Pet Dating Sites
DateMyPet.com, Petpeoplemeet.com, Lovemelovemypets.com and Meetdoglovers.com are some of the dating sites available for pet lovers. Connect with someone nearby and bring your dog to your meeting to see if you all get along. When you decide to take things further, make sure your pet gives the seal of approval.
