1. Two Dogs Survive Hurricane Katrina and Haiti Earthquake A New Orleans couple found Bella and Dieter roaming the streets in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Five years later, while in Port-au-Prince with their owners, the dachshund mixes survived a 7.0 earthquake. The Humane Society has reunited the dogs with their family. 2. 9/11 Guide Dogs Riva and Salty, yellow Labrador guide dogs, led their owners and another woman to safety from the 71st floor of the World Trade Center on September 11. The dogs have become celebrities in the guide dog community, while inspiring a nation. (BBC) (YouTube)

3. Cat Found Frozen Thaws, Survives Norfolk Animal Control found a frozen cat during January's winter storm in Boston. The cat showed no sign of life, but Officer Hilary Cohen still wrapped the cat in blankets, turned up the heat in her car, and took the cat to the hospital. The cat miraculously survived and now hopefully enjoys the winter weather from indoors. (CBS)

4. Helmsley leaves her dog $12 million When Leona Helmsley died in 2007, she left her dog "Trouble" $12 million. The white Maltese received more than Helmsley's four grandchildren, combined. But the 1980s "Queen of Mean" hotelier showed a softer side by donating billions of dollars to dog charities. (MSNBC)

5. Nubs the Iraqi dog of war Nubs became man's best friend with Major Brian Dennis, a marine stationed in Iraq. With his ears cut off near the skull, the mutt showed signs of a difficult life in war-torn Iraq. When Dennis was assigned to a different location almost 75 miles away, Nubs ran after the convoy. After days of walking, Nubs arrived at the new location, shocking the marines. Today Nubs lives with Major Dennis in California, but it is still a mystery how he found his way back to the Major. 6. Stranded Dog Rescued From Raging LA River Around 50 firefighters came to the rescue of Vernon, a German shepherd stranded in a Los Angeles river. A helicopter lowered one of the firefighters, who lifted the canine to safety. Maybe reading about dog water safety would have kept Vernon off this list. (VIDEO)

7. Dog Pulls Injured Dog from the Road A homeless dog dodged through busy highway traffic to pull another dog hit by a car. A surveillance camera captured the rescuer dog dragging the dog onto a median strip, away from oncoming cars. (Huffington Post)

8. Stowaway cat survives two-week voyage to Britain from Egypt After two weeks on board a merchant ship from Egypt, Pharaoh the cat miracously arrived in Britain. 9. "Miracle Dog" Survives 3 Months on Deserted Island Buddy, a four year old beagle, may have made a sequel to Castaway. The New Jersey dog wandered away from his home to an uninhabited island. Ninety-eight days later, Buddy was found and reunited with his family. (NBC New York)

10. Australian cat strays 2,400 miles, returns home Clyde, a longhaired Himalayan cat, disappeared from his home for three years. He was found wandering in a hospital, 2,400 miles away from his owners. An identification microchip helped a veterinarian reunite Clyde with his family. (MSNBC)
